SLOVAKIA holiday resorts Mountains

Slovenský raj Mts. stretch in the east of Slovakia. The landscape of this mountain range is highly attractive due to its karstic plateaux and narrows where the tourists climb over the roaring waterfalls and the surface karstic forms.

The tallest mountains of Slovakia Vysoké Tatry situated in the north of the country with its tallest peak Gerlachovský štít (2654 m above sea level) is in fact the smallest in Europe in terms of area (what explains their attribute of the “miniature Alps”). However, as far as natural assets are concerned they are among the most interesting in central Europe.

There are three most visited localities in the Pieniny Mts. - the wonderful canyon of the frontier river Dunajec, the almost 300 m deep narrow of the brook Lesnícky potok and the rocks Haligovské skaly.

The Malá Fatra Mts. is one of the most valuable mountain ranges of Slovakia in terms of landscape. It spreads in the north-west of Slovakia and it is full of tourists in every season of the year.

Following the Vysoké Tatry Mts. the Nízke Tatry is the second tallest mountain range of Slovakia and a much sought after recreation resort in all seasons.

Slovenský kras (Slovak Karst) along with the Aggtelek karst in Hungary forms one unit which is the most extensive karstic territory in central Europe. It stretches on the area of 600 km² and it contains 1110 caves and abysses.

The Veľká Fatra Mts. situated on the dividing line between the central and north-western Slovakia is attractive for visitors above all in winter (thanks to their ski resorts) although the mountain range can also offer beautiful tracking in summer and interesting historic monuments in its foothills.
