In total, there are more than thousand protected territories with an area exceeding 10,000 square kilometres in Slovakia. Some level of protection is applied to more than a fifth of the Slovak territory including nine National Parks.
Many plants and animals are protected under different legal provisions. Entire territories, which include the National Parks, Landscape Areas and Nature Reserves are likewise legally protected.
The movement in the territory of all National Parks is subject to special rules, which are normally summarized in visitors codes.
