The Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic opened for the seventh time the Cultural Monument of the Year competition. Sixteen projects were nominated for the competition and were evaluated on October 22^nd 2012 by a specialist jury led by the general director of the Heritage Office of the Slovak Republic, Katarína Kosová.

The Slovak  Association of Camping and Caravanning (SACC) announced the campsite of the year for 2012. It was the “u Svätého Urbana” campsite in Podhájska. TheCamping park Karpaty Kuchyňa finished in second place and the third place was held by Camping Pullmann Piešťany.

In October 2012, the Muránska planina national park received the prestigious international award “Charter for Sustainable Tourism”. It was the first territory not only in Slovakia, but also in the whole Carpathian area to receive such an award and has become an inspirational example for the whole area of Central and Eastern Europe.

Since the end of October, cyclists have been able to use the approximately 30 km-long cycling path from Krásno nad Kysucou to Nová Bystrica. The cycling path follows the route of the former forest zig-zag railway which ran from the first half of last century from Nová Bystrica to Oščadnica.

Mountain hiking in the higher reaches of the Tatras is coming to an end. From November 1^st the annual winter closure of hiking paths begins. This concerns a total of over 200 km of marked paths which could be dangerous for hikers in the winter period.

This traditional hotel in the historical centre of Bratislava by the Danube was re-opened in October 2012 after one year of complete renovation. The Hotel Devín is a listed building, the work of the famous architect Prof. Emil Belluš and one of the most famous buildings of the functionalist period.

Measurements by specialists have confirmed that the service tree in Modra with a trunk diameter of 160 cm is the largest of all the known service trees in the world. It grows in Europe, Asia and scattered in north Africa. Despite the fact that it has very good fruit and high quality wood, today it is an endangered species.
