On the south-western protuberances of the mountains Zemplínske vrchy in eastern Slovakia, south of town Trebišov, is an exclusive and also the smallest Slovak viticultural region, that of Tokaj.
Viticultural region of Tokaj
Its core in fact is in Hungary and its one of few regions in the world where the grown grapes are suitable for the production of natural sweet wines.
The viticultural region of Tokaj on an area of 998 hectares is the smallest of the six viticultural regions in Slovakia. It consists of seven villages situated in district Trebišov: Bara, Čerhov, Černochov, Malá Tŕňa, Slovenské Nové Mesto, Veľká Tŕňa a Viničky.
As this is one of the warmest parts of the country, this region has been classified into the best category regarding wine growing. In some years, sun warms the vineyards as many as 2,200 hours a year.
At present, in the Slovak part of the Tokaj region, the varieties like- Furmint, Lipovina, Muškát žltý, dry wines - Omšové, Tokajské samorodné suché a and sweet wines - Tokajské samorodné sladké, Tokajský výber are grown.
