The tallest mountains of Slovakia Vysoké Tatry situated in the north of the country with its tallest peak Gerlachovský štít (2654 m above sea level) is in fact the smallest in Europe in terms of area (what explains their attribute of the “miniature Alps”). However, as far as natural assets are concerned they are among the most interesting in central Europe.

The relief in their territory has been modelled by glaciers that created glacier valleys with high-mountain lakes. The lake Veľké Hincovo pleso is the biggest (20 ha) and deepest (53 m) of them.
The highest one of many waterfalls is Kmeťov vodopád (80 m) in the valley Nefcerka. Caves are many although only the cave Belianska jaskyňa with dripstone ornamentation - sinter waterfalls, pagoda-shaped stalagmites, varied forms of stalactites and sinter forms in little lakes is open to public. It is also exploited for therapy - speleoclimatic stays.
The symbol of the Vysoké Tatry Mts. is the Tatra chamois, and the mountains are home to the marmot or the eagle. Vysoké Tatry Mts. is the most visited mountain range and important ski resort (Štrbské pleso and Tatranská Lomnica are some of the most famous ones).
Thanks to its pure air the settlements Vyšné Hágy, Tatranská Polianka or Smokovce also provide services as climatic spas for the prevention and therapy of the respiratory system diseases.
