The centre of Kysuce, situated in the north-west of Slovakia is the town ČADCA - the starting point for trips in the area of mountain ranges Javorník and Beskydy.
ČADCA (population 25,561) boasts a busy cultural and sport life during the whole year. In winter there is the traditional passage over the Javorníky Mts. on skis, the main event of June is the popular marathon of Kysuce. End of the summer is the time of festival of spiritual songs called Magnificat. The weekend following the St. Bartholomew name day (24 of August) is the term of the traditional fair.
HISTORY
Čadca is in terms of Slovakia a comparatively young town. The first written reference to the existence of a settlement in this place is from 1565. It has always benefited from its situation on the crossroads of trade routes running from the Kingdom of Hungary to Moravia and Silesia, and this was the reason why it became more important than the neighbouring towns. Empress Maria Theresa promoted it to the town in 1778.
MONUMENTS
The “young” town of Čadca contains “young” monuments. The oldest and also the most important though, is the Baroque St. Bartholomew church built in 1735 on the site of an older wooden church. Part of the main altar is the precious altar painting by an outstanding Slovak painter, Jozef Božetech Klemens from the second half of the 19th century. A group of 19 protected lime trees stands next to the church, which were planted here in the memory of the 1848 uprising.
RECOMMENDED TRIP
It is possible to make nice hiking trips to the mountain ranges of Javorníka and Turzovská vrchovina. An interesting tourist destination near Čadca is the quarry situated in the locality Milošová-Megoňky where the unique stone balls of Kysuce can be seen.
