At the session in Spanish Sevilla on 27 June 2009, based on positive scientific evaluation of experts, 21 members of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee decided on the extension of the original cultural monument "Spišský hrad Castle and associated cultural monuments“, inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List, by adding the historic town of Levoča.
The Slovak monument will be included in the list under the title "Levoča, Spišský hrad and associated cultural monuments“. The Slovak monument is one of the 15 properties the Committee recommended for the inscription out of the total of 27 submitted projects.
The SR has five cultural monuments on the UNESCO World Heritage List (historic town of Banská Štiavnica and monuments in its vicinity, Vlkolínec - folk architecture reserve, Levoča, Spišský hrad Castle and the associated cultural monuments, the historic centre of the town of Bardejov, Wooden churches in the Slovak part of the Carpathian mountain area) and two natural properties (caves of the Slovenský kras Karst and Aggtelek Karst and beech forests of the Carpathians).
