The Protected landscape area Cerová vrchovina stretches in the territory of the eponymous mountain range in the south of central Slovakia. This territory is unique in Slovakia because it is the landscape of extinguished volcanoes.
The Protected landscape area was designated in 1989 on an area 16,282 ha. Administration of the PLA seats in Rimavská Sobota.
The mountain range Cerová vrchovina is valuable for the assets of the “dead” nature. It is a kind of a huge open-air geological museum. Visitors can see here volcanic cones (Ragáč, Veľký Bučeň), prepared vents (Hajnáčsky hradný vrch, Soví hrad), and lava sheets and streams (Pohanský hrad).
The Protected landscape area Cerová vrchovina also boasts valuable and interesting “live” nature. Forests coat more than 60 per cent of its area. Thermophilous species prevail in its wood-species composition.
The mountain range Cerová vrchovina is known for highly varied plant species - as many as 1,250 were identified here. The rocky steppes and forest-steppes highly appreciated by botanists above all.
