Protected landscape area Latorica
Protected landscape area Latorica is the only large-scale territory in the east of Slovakia that protects the lowland landscape. It was designated in 1990. Its area of only 23,198 hectares means that it is one of the smallest in Slovakia. Administration of the PLA seats in Trebišov.
The substantial part of the landscape corresponds to the system of riverbeds and arms surrounded by alluvial forest and wetland. The whole natural complex is regularly flooded. The most important phenomenon of the PLA is today the rare and extra valuable water and swamp biocenose unique in Slovakia.
The character of the natural landscape, which depends on water, is favourable to waterfowl which uses this PLA not only for permanent nesting but also, in case of migratory birds, for short rests. Occurrence of the rare swamp tortoise in this PLA inspired the authors of the PLAs logo.
