The PLA Strážovské vrchy in western Slovakia is an attractive world of bizarre rocks, dense forests and picturesque basins and valleys.
The Protected landscape area Strážovské vrchy was designated as such in 1989. The territory with the area of 30.979 hectares lies in two mountain ranges - Strážovské vrchy and Súľovské vrchy. Administration of the PLA Strážovské vrchy seats in Považská Bystrica.
Two specific landscapes can be seen in the territory of this Protected landscape area. One of them is the mountain range Súľovské vrchy, in the north. In their core is a little erosion basin, which is skirted by the ring of bizarre rocks Súľovské skaly.
The southern part of the PLA stretching in the Strážovské vrchy mountains contains deep forests and valleys. Its landscape dominants are the rocks Strážov and Vápeč.
The most attractive landmark of the region is the mountain commune Čičmany with typical wooden houses decorated by painted ornaments. Next to the tourist centre Mojtín is a small high plain with abundant karstic phenomena.
